Medical Assistant

Local MD Urgent Care is a rapidly growing, locally owned Urgent Care group. We currently have 4 locations across the Chicagoland area with additional locations opening soon. We are looking for experienced Nurse Practitioners who put patient care at the forefront, are great communicators, value teamwork and are looking to grow their career with the right team.

The Medical Assistant will work within their scope of license to provide great patient and provider assistance. This position is responsible for patient charting within the scope of license, phlebotomy, patient registration, patient support, insurance verification, collecting co-payment and lab processes. Striving for excellence in customer service, teamwork, clinical and communication skills are essential for Local MD Urgent Care Medical Assistants.


This position requires a working knowledge of and adherence to Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.


Job Duties:

  • Triage patients according to Local MD Urgent Care Clinical policy, including but not limited, to taking vitals, updating patient demographic or insurance information, and providing written documentation to enable clear communication with Providers regarding patient issues.

  • Perform clinic procedures/duties according to Local MD Urgent Care’s policies and procedures.

  • Assist Providers with procedures.

  • Accurately document patient information in the patient’s electronic medical record.

  • Complete patient charting within the scope of license.

  • Administer medications as directed by Provider

  • Obtain blood and other lab samples/specimens, as directed by Provider.

  • Process lab samples as ordered, per Local MD Urgent Care Clinical Policies/Procedures and external lab procedures to ensure accuracy of results.

  • Accompany patients to triage or exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.

  • Accurately document patient information, taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.

  • Confirming patient insurance and collecting co-payments as needed

  • Welcoming patients into the clinic as well as any patient support needed during visit.

  • Relay instructions to patients/families. May provide more individualized patient/family education and supportive counseling as needed.

  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other state and federal regulations. Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, IL Department of Health).

  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.

  • Prepare and managing of electronic medical records to ensure information completed and documented appropriately.

  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to Local MD Urgent Care protocol.

  • Clean/disinfect exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.

  • Clean/disinfect back-office areas according to scheduled maintenance program and document in appropriate records. Assist in inventory and stocking processes for facility.

  • Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.

  • Sanitize laboratory bathrooms after each patient use.

  • Call patients with lab results.

  • Clean/restock examination rooms to prepare for each patient.

  • Sanitize back-office surfaces with high patient contact.

  • Assists front office registration at start of patient encounter, including collecting insurance information and additional payment information from patient during their visit as necessary

  • Attend Medical Assistant meetings and all required staff meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Administrative Policies and Procedures

  • Maintain working knowledge of office and medical services, clinical policies/procedures and in the use of all relevant office equipment and medical devices/equipment (AD machine and EKG), computers, and EMR systems.

Education & Experience:

  • Medical Assistant (MA) licensed in the state of Illinois, college education as per licensing requirements, high school diploma, or equivalent.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as a MA in an outpatient medical clinic, medical office, or hospital setting required.

  • Must possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills, a strong understanding of ethical behavior and confidentiality, and advanced critical thinking and organizational abilities.

Ability to operate office and medical equipment standard in a clinical medical environment. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time in addition to walking, quick turns, bending and bending to lift, lift above shoulder height, push, pull and assist patients from flat to sit and sit to stand. Ability to bend and lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Daily exposure to mild to moderate sanitizing chemicals expected. Hearing and vision required.
