Blood Work & Testing

Blood tests can provide critical information regarding your overall health and wellness. Oftentimes, routine blood work will be a part of your annual physical exam. But there are also times when you’re in need of a blood draw to look for signs and indicators of diseases or conditions.

At Local MD Urgent Care, we have the ability to run a number of different tests when drawing blood. If you’re in need of routine blood work, or would like an STD test, schedule an appointment at your nearest Local MD, or just walk in!

What is routine blood work?

Routine blood work is generally part of your annual physical exam. Having your blood drawn and tested is a great way to monitor your health, check in on past problems, evaluate existing conditions, and even prevent future illnesses! Routine blood tests generally cover a number of critical factors, including blood cell counts and glucose levels.

What can a routine blood test tell you?

Routine blood work can be an excellent information source on the health of your organis. Blood tests help identify nutritional deficiencies and markers for certain diseases and conditions. Here are some of the most common types of blood tests:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) – checks levels of 10 critical blood components, including red and white blood cell counts.

  • Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) – measures eight different substances in the blood, including glucose and sodium.

  • Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Testing – Detects sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea, HIV and chlamydia.

  • Lipid Panel – Tests your cholesterol levels.

  • Thyroid Panel – Assesses your thyroid function by testing the levels of various thyroid hormones.

  • Coagulation Panel – Tests to see if your blood is clotting properly

  • Cardiac Biomarkers – Checks enzyme levels in the blood, helping to understand your heart function.

During routine blood work at your annual physical, the blood test typically included CBC, BMP, thyroid panel and testing for vital nutrients.

Do you need to fast before blood work?

You only need to fast before specific types of blood tests. Two of the most common types of tests you need to fast for are lipid tests and glucose tests. Otherwise, as always, your best bet if you don’t know whether or not you should be fasting before a blood test is to ask your physician. Our team here at Local MD is always happy to answer your questions.
